Spica Week 10: Good Gifts

This week has been pleasantly calm and uneventful. It’s amazing how “normal” the spica life becomes. My arms are strong enough now that I don’t really notice the extra weight of the cast when picking Londyn up. The spots on my hip and forearm where her cast rubs and digs in when I hold her are hardened and numb to the pain. Her pretty spica chair seems omnipresent in every room, and is more a central piece of furniture than any other chair or couch in the house. We walk, drive, eat, play, bathe, nurse, and change diapers. All the routines, though more difficult than before, are now really just routine.

On my wall in the living room hangs a rustic wood sign, painted with the words, “Be Grateful”. There’s a reason the sign caught my eye in Hobby Lobby, and it’s not just because it’s pretty. Many days while living in WI I’ve felt discontent, as my husband and I know this is a place we will eventually pass through, and not where we want to settle down. I bought this sign as a reminder before the endless, terrible Wisconsin winter began. Funny thing is, in the middle of winter, we began our hip dysplasia journey and I have needed the reminder to be grateful more than ever.

It may have taken me over 10 weeks, but today- I have to say, I’m grateful.

I’m grateful the weather is turning to glorious warmth and there’s even sunburn on my shoulders.

I’m grateful we recently got to see family, and that we have family we love to see, even if they don’t live near us.

I’m grateful I have two beautiful children, and that I’m married to their sweet father.

I’m grateful that Londyn’s hip dysplasia was diagnosed early enough to *hopefully* treat without drastic measures.

I’m grateful to live near an excellent children’s hospital.

I’m grateful for friends that encourage and love us.

I’m grateful for the spica cast so I can squeeze Londyn as hard as I want.

I’m grateful for the spica cast protecting Londyn’s vital organs when her brother decides to bear hug (…bodyslam) her.

I’m grateful for the spica cast, that is allowing my daughter’s hip to form, without open surgery or hardware placement.

I’m grateful for a God, that regardless of my faith, loves to give me good, and perfect gifts.

James 1:17 “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights. . . “
