- You can purchase coban tape to "cast" your child's special bear or stuffed animal before surgery.  

- Ask to speak to a Child Life Specialist from your hospital. They often have photo binders of each room your child will pass through on his or her surgery day. This helps lessen anxiety for older children. Also, your child will be able to choose a color of the cast they’ll be fitted with. 

- Coordinate with your child's school to make a plan of action. Keep in mind that the school may not be able to take on responsibility of lifting a casted child. Ask teachers for activities or if child can visit their classroom a few times. One spica kid’s dad was able to take FMLA leave to bring his son to preschool 3 hours a day.

- If your child has allergies and needs an epi pen, ask your allergist for a preferred alternate location to inject the epi pen in case of emergency when legs are casted.
