Favorite Spica Journey Memory:

Getting the cast off?! Haha, no... Within 6 hours of getting home from the hospital after Maura's closed reduction she began slowly army crawling down the hallway- grunting and groaning as she went. It was that moment that I realized how determined and strong she truly is.

Biggest Lesson Learned:

I learned how capable we, as a family, are of handling challenges. This was very unexpected and new territory, but my husband and I stepped up to the plate and got through every day for our daughter. We're capable of more than we knew.

What Do You Wish You Knew:

Casts vary. Our cast came up higher, but was looser and had a wider diaper area than others I saw. What worked for one person might not work for your cast. I was able to ask our ortho in advance what ours would be like, which was very helpful.

Favorite Gear or Must Have Item:

Spica table for meals, we still use ours with our rhino brace! My daughter also loved the cast cooler. But honestly, Maura played on the floor like she did before her cast and got along just fine.

Final Thoughts or Advice:

Don't wish away the time in the cast. Your child is only this young once. It's easy to get caught up in the negative thoughts, the "she should be standing, etc." but try to focus on what your child can still do. Gross motor milestones might be stalled, but your child is still developing in so many other ways!
