Ava

Spica Baby's Age When He or She Was First Casted:

6 months

Favorite Spica Journey Memory:

My favorite memory would have to be the first time she scooted across the floor in her first spica cast like a baby sea turtle trying to get to the ocean!

Biggest Lesson Learned:

Patience! Nothing fixes itself overnight! They are doctors not Miracle workers, so have patience if things haven't gone as planned, it will be okay.

What Do You Wish You Knew:

I feel as though I educated myself well before we started this journey, I didn't use the vinegar tip to keep cast clean, just towel dry after each diaper change to keep moisture out and sponge baths daily!

Favorite Gear or Must Have Item:

Bumbo chair. We picked up a free bumbo chair off Facebook and my boyfriend cut out the sides and filled the bottom with spray foam to make it more stable and weigh it down. We then sealed it with duct tape.

Final Thoughts or Advice:

Do Not let this journey stop you from living life. You will have to adjust, as will your child, but the experience has taught me patience and understanding. I have two children, Ava being my second. My first child, Liam age 3, does not have any hip issues, but for any parents with multiple children, one in cast and one or more out of cast don't fear!! I went grocery shopping and to many family events during this long process! I did not use sunscreen when we went out. I kept a large straw hat on her head for shade and usually had her in a baby holster against my chest. Along with bringing the bumbo chair with us if I needed to put her down to eat if we happened to be at dinner or a family event. It's more difficult but very rewarding!
