Spica Baby's Name:
Spica Baby's Age When He or She Was First Casted:
Weeks In The Cast:
Favorite Spica Journey Memory:
My 3 year old spilled cinnamon spice on the cast, I vacuumed the baby clean laughing in my head at the thought of what people would think if they could see me.
Biggest Lesson Learned:
To appreciate the things others take for granted. Watching your child crawl, run, hop, climb for the miracle that it is. To help other parents on their "hip" journey.
What Do You Wish You Knew:
Someday it will be a distant memory. I promise.
Favorite Gear or Must Have Item:
I invented Hipstix. A tool that makes changing diapers in a spica cast easy. It helps the caregiver slip a full sized diaper into the cast and position it the way it's meant to be worn, greatly reducing leaks. A video/ordering instructions available here.
Final Thoughts or Advice
My daughter was born with severe Bi-lateral Hip Displaysia. She underwent surgery when she was 10 weeks old and spent 12 weeks in a spica cast. The nurses weren't familiar with the cast and were no help in learning how to diaper her. She was sent home from the hospital with a newborn diaper shoved in the cast opening. I knew we had to find a better way. I came up with hipstix, a tool so any caregiver could put an adequately sized diaper on a baby/child in a spica easily. It took several prototypes and then success!! We were no longer overwhelmed changing her diapers, my husband and I agreed we could change her in the spica twice as fast as we could normally. Not only that, but her skin was kept dry and no more leaks in the cast!!! She was in the same cast the FULL 12 weeks and the Doctors said it was the cleanest cast they'd ever seen! I'm offering my invention to other "hip" parents to help simplify your lives while caring for your "hip" baby. Here is a link to a video I made explaining how to use the HIPSTIX.
